The U.S. Senate Republicans have introduced their version of President Donald Trump's tax-cut and spending bill, which is broadly similar to the House-passed legislation. The two chambers must reconcile their differences before the bill can be sent to the President for signature.

Key differences include:

* Temporary vs. Permanent Tax Breaks: 

The House bill, which would add $2.8 trillion to the nation's debt over the next decade , includes an array of tax cuts, but many of them would expire after a few years. The Senate version would make some of those tax breaks permanent.
    * Child Tax Credit: 

The House raises it to $2,500 through 2028, then it reverts to $2,000, indexed for inflation. The Senate permanently increases it to $2,200, indexed to inflation.

    * Standard Deduction: 

The House temporarily increases it to $32,000 through 2028. The Senate permanently increases it to $32,000 starting in 2026.

    * Business Research and Development Costs:

The House version would increase the maximum deduction for state and local tax payments from $10,000 to $40,400 starting in 2026. The Senate version would keep the $10,000 SALT cap in place.

* Deduction for Older Americans: 

The House would provide a deduction of up to $4,000 for people over 65. The Senate would provide a $6,000 deduction. Both would end after 2028.
* No Tax on Tips: 

Both chambers would provide a deduction for tipped income through 2028. The Senate version caps that deduction at $25,000 while the House does not include a cap.

* Retaliatory (Section 899) Tax: 

Both the House and Senate would allow the U.S. to impose new taxes on residents, businesses and other entities from countries that are found to impose "unfair foreign taxes". The Senate version would take effect in 2027, one year after the House version would take effect.
* Clean Energy Projects: 

Both the House and Senate versions would roll back clean-energy incentives created by President Joe Biden's 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, but they differ in their timing. For example, under the House bill, a tax credit for wind, solar and other clean energy projects would not apply to any project that begins operation after 2028. Projects that began construction after 60 days after the bill became law also would not qualify, even if they were completed before the end of 2028. The Senate bill, by contrast, would phase out that credit for wind and solar projects through 2027, and phase it out starting in 2033 for hydro, nuclear and geothermal projects.
* Medicaid: 

Both the House and the Senate would clamp down on "provider taxes," which states levy on Medicaid providers as a way to boost federal funding. The Senate version adds specific language that closes loopholes and prevents states from designing workarounds, which is absent in the House bill.
* Sports Teams: 

The House bill would cut a tax break for sports-team owners in half. The Senate version does not include that language.
* Debt Ceiling: 

The House bill would raise the U.S. debt ceiling, currently at $36 trillion, by $4 trillion. The Senate bill would raise it by $5 trillion. Congress must act on this by sometime this summer or risk triggering a default on the nation's $36.2 trillion in debt.
* Courts: 

Both the House and Senate bills seek to limit U.S. judges' power to block federal policies nationwide, a key tool for the federal court system as it considers dozens of challenges to the Trump administration's activities.

Let's take the time to go over Trump’s “big beautiful bill” and why it sucks.

**Tax Cuts**

Central to the bill is trillions of dollars worth of tax cuts.

Republicans will permanently extend Trump’s 2017 tax cuts that disproportionately benefited the wealthy and corporations.

To help pay for the loss in revenue, Republicans are repealing clean energy tax credits passed under Biden.

The bill also issues a permanent exemption level of $15 million for the estate and gift tax, $30 million for married couples, which primarily benefits wealthier individuals.

The tax breaks and increases in standard deductions that *might* provide some benefit to lower income, working class Americans and seniors are only temporary, while the individual rate deductions and extensions from the 2017 tax bill, along with the higher exemption rates will remain permanent.

In other words, the majority of the tax benefits in the bill favor the rich and corporations.

The bill is expected to reduce federal tax revenue by over $4 trillion and it is estimated to add more than $3 trillion to the nation's debt and $5 trillion to the debt ceiling.

**Corporate "Giveaways**

The bill includes a multitude of tax breaks and incentives for corporations and rich business owners. "Trickle down" policies that are expected to cost hundreds of billions and require little to no oversight or transparency to make sure that they are—in fact—"trickling down" to workers and communities.

**Spending Cuts to Healthcare and Food Assistance**

The bill will be shifting the cost of programs like SNAP to the states and imposing work requirements for parents and older Americans applying for food assistance.

The bill requires that the states now shoulder a percentage of the cost of benefits; reducing federal spending on these programs.

The bill increases the age for work requirements to 64 and lowers the age a child must be for the parent to receive benefits.

The big beautiful bill includes over $1 trillion in reduced spending for Medicaid; imposing new requirements for healthcare while also requiring that enrollees verify their eligibility more times per year. The Bill also includes substantial cuts to subsidies provided by the ACA.

These changes will cause millions of Americans to lose their healthcare and SNAP coverage; impacting lower income Americans, the disabled, seniors and children the most.

The bill also includes across the board cuts to Medicare Advantage plans, standalone prescription drug plans, and payments to healthcare providers. This could lead to increased premiums and reduced benefits for seniors while limiting their access to care, especially in underserved communities.

The bill also proposes cuts to various community health programs, caregiver support services, and Meals on Wheels; meaning higher out of pocket costs for medical resources, prescription drugs and technologies.

The bill repeals Biden era price negotiation rules, which could reduce drug availability.

**Cuts to Veterans**

The big beautiful bill includes staffing reductions, cuts to the VA and the Toxic Exposure Fund (TEF), which covers healthcare costs for veterans exposed to toxic substances like burn pits.

There will be a ban on abortion services at VA facilities and an end to mandatory vaccinations for staff.

**Cuts to Research**

The bill also includes reductions to NIH funded research, and cuts to grants and training programs. This could halt progress on medical research projects like those focused on Alzheimer's, cancer and heart disease. These cuts could disrupt developments in scientific research and lead to layoffs and fewer job opportunities in the research field.

The Treatment Equity fund also faces funding reductions; meaning cuts to community-based behavioral health and opioid treatment and prevention programs.

Non-defense discretionary spending caps may also reduce funding for agencies like NASA and the National Science Foundation, among others.

**Cuts to Planned Parenthood**

Republicans are also eliminating Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood; restricting access to abortion, life saving treatments, cancer screenings, pap smears and birth control for millions of women.

The bill also introduces new taxes and restrictions on non-profits and charities.

**Funding for Mass Deportations and National Security**

The bill will include over $150 billion in funding for deportation and immigration enforcement, like $45 billion for detention centers, an 800 percent increase.

The bill also expands the capacity of detention centers to hold over 100,000 people daily.

Provides $14.4 billion for ICE transportation and removal operations and $10 billion in grants to states that conform to federal immigration enforcement.

It also provides $46.5 billion for Trump's border wall and for upgrades like new surveillance systems.

$4.1 billion to hire new ICE and border patrol agents, $2 billion for signing and retention bonuses, $2.8 billion for new border technology like AI assisted surveillance, drones, and "smart wall tech." 

The bill also imposes a $1,000 fee on migrants seeking asylum.

Policy changes include streamlining deportation procedures, expanding expedited removal, increasing screening for asylum seekers, adding new fees for applications, and taxing remittances sent overseas by immigrants 

The bill also provides an extra $150 billion for the DOD, including at least $25 billion for Trump's "Golden Dome of America," a project expected to cost $500+ billion.

$21 billion will go towards restocking the US weapons arsenal, $34 billion for Naval upgrades, and $5 billion more for border security. 

**Changes to Student Loans and Pell Grants**

Republicans will be overhauling the student loan program. This will include replacing all current loan repayment systems with plans that are far less accommodating. 

Additionally, loan amounts will be capped and deferment options will no longer exist for those facing hardship or unemployment.

Pell Grants will include new eligibility restrictions and requirements. Tens of thousands of students could be penalized, lose eligibility or receive smaller awards, making college even less affordable.

The bill will eliminate Biden era regulations that assisted borrowers as well.

There will also be a tax increase on University endowments.

**Weakened Judicial oversight**

Buried deep in the bill is a provision that shields government misconduct by stripping courts of their power to enforce injunctions and contempt citations if plaintiffs can't afford a security bond.

In layman's terms, the provision says that if someone sues the government and a judge orders the government to stop doing something (like violating rights), that order won’t be enforceable unless the person suing pays a cash bond upfront. Most people can't afford this; allowing the government to ignore court orders without consequence.

**Drill, Baby Drill**

The bill allows for more leasing of public lands for drilling, mining and logging and expedites government approval for these projects.

Republicans are also cutting royalty fees once paid by companies to extract resources from the land; a Biden era measure that sought to address our country's addiction to fossil fuels.

It just hasn’t set in how my, and many of our, entire generation is just absolutely demolished by this bill. This will set progress back decades, plunge us into a society of working to survive off of pennies while the one percent is elevated to a financial godhood and ultimately KILL people.

This fight isn’t even about have representatives who are actually supposed to represent us, that fight at the federal level is all but gone. This is literally how a fight for survival, with any semblance of freedom going towards fighting for our neighbors and trying to keep them from disappearing. 

I don’t know if I will ever see the damage from this repaired in my lifetime, and it will be too late if it ever is rectified. My future, family and those I care about are in the crosshairs and the shot has been taken.
